The Federal Public Health Service

The Public Health Service Act of 1944 structured the 'United States Public Health Service' (PHS) as the primary division of the Department of Health. This would later be re-named as the Department of Health, Education and Welfare (HEW).

In 1979, under the 'Department of Education Organization Act', the education functions were transferred to a new department, called the 'United States Department of Education'. And the 'United States Public Health Service' (PHS) was again re-named as the 'Department of Health and Human Services' (HHS).
